Babek was an Iranian Azerbaijani Turk who lived around 800 AD. He is seen as a national hero in the eyes of Azerbaijani Turks, because he resisted to be ruled under the Arab empire. In July of 2003, for the first time in the history of Azerbaijani Turks, hundreds and thousands of S. Azerbaijani Turks flooded the famous Babek Castle, located in the Southern Azerbaijani Turkish city of Kaleybar. During the ceremonies, thousands of Southern Azerbaijani Turks raised the S. Azerbaijani flag despite Iranian regime’s efforts to arrest all who were there and fire shots if necessary. Seven (7) years have passed since the first national meeting in the Babek Castle, and Southern Azerbaijani Turks have continued to become more aware of their ancestors, history, culture, national identity and they have started to ask peacefully for their basic rights, including schools, TV shows, radio and communication media in their mother language (Azerbaijani Turkish), Azerbaijani Turkish culture, and most importantly, the right to self-determination. Nearly thirty-five (35) million Azerbaijani Turks have been denied their basic human-rights for decades by the chauvinist and fascist Iranian Persian Mullah regime. S. Azerbaijani Turks are trying any peaceful and internationally humanitarian ways to make their voice heard and in the process they are becoming more involved in the National Awakening Movement and gaining social, cultural and political experiences that will be vital and crucial for the future of Southern Azerbaijan. Babek’s birth day anniversary this year was celebrated again with Southern Azerbaijani national flags in various S. Azerbaijani Turkish cities.
